I was still at my Flamingo Crossings hotel at 11:52am with a Skipper's Canteen reservation at 12:25pm.
That's 33 minutes. Magic Kingdom. Dining reservation. No car at the gate.
I called a Lyft. It took about 12 minutes to get to the Transportation and Ticket Center. That put me at the TTC at roughly 12:04pm with 21 minutes until my reservation window closed. What most people don't think about when they book a dining reservation at Magic Kingdom from an off-property hotel is that getting to the TTC is not the same as getting to the park. You still have to get inside.
At the TTC you have two options. You take the express monorail directly to Magic Kingdom, or you take the resort monorail — the loop that stops at the Polynesian and Grand Floridian before the park entrance. The express is faster in theory. But if a train just left, there's a line formed and getting longer, there you are standing on a platform waiting.
I made a split-second call. I saw the resort monorail sitting there ready to go. I got on.
It stopped at the Polynesian. Stopped at the Grand Floridian. I was watching the clock the whole time.
I walked into Magic Kingdom at 12:22pm. Three minutes before my reservation. They give you a 15-minute window so I had 18 minutes of cushion, but I didn't know that standing on the monorail platform at 12:10pm watching it stop at every resort.
I was in my hotel room at 11:52am. I was sitting down at Skipper's Canteen at 12:33pm.
It worked out. But here's what you need to know before you book a dining reservation at Magic Kingdom from Flamingo Crossings.
The Lyft gets you to the TTC, not the park. Most mapping apps show you the drive time to Walt Disney World and stop there. They don't account for the monorail platform wait, the resort loop stops, or the walk from the Magic Kingdom monorail station to your restaurant. For Skipper's Canteen specifically, it's not far from the entrance — but you're still adding 15 to 20 minutes after your Lyft drops you off before you're sitting down.
You have two hours to cancel without a charge. I couldn't cancel. If you're running late and you're past that two-hour window, you're eating the fee or you're running. Neither is how you want to start a park day with your family.
One person moving fast made this possible. I was alone with no stroller, no kids, no gear. If I had a family of four with a six-year-old I would have missed that reservation and paid the cancellation fee anyway.
How you get to Magic Kingdom from an off-property Flamingo Crossings hotel matters more than most booking sites tell you. The drive is only part of it.
