I walked up to the Magic Kingdom entrance on a Saturday night — took the rideshare over, rode the monorail across, tapped in — and got rejected right at the gate. I'd paid for my admission. I had my pass. And the tapstile still turned me away, because I hadn't made a park reservation.

I'm the guy who tells everyone to check this stuff, and I got caught anyway.

So here's the honest answer, because the rule confuses almost everyone.

If you bought a standard date-based ticket — the kind where you pick your start date, which is what most families buy — you do not need a park reservation anymore. That requirement went away in January 2024. Buy your ticket, show up, tap in. Done.

The trap is for annual passholders, and it's the reason I got bounced. Passholders can walk into most parks after 2:00 PM without a reservation — except Magic Kingdom on Saturdays and Sundays. On weekends, Magic Kingdom still requires a passholder reservation no matter what time you show up. That's the one exception hiding inside an otherwise relaxed system, and it's easy to forget until you're standing at the gate like I was.

If you're a passholder, the fix takes 30 seconds: open the My Disney Experience app, make the Magic Kingdom reservation before you head over on a weekend, and you'll tap right through. I reserved mine standing right there at the entrance, then walked straight in —  I'd already burned the rideshare and the monorail ride getting there. Don't be me. Check it before you leave your hotel.

One more thing before you book.
